Portland Courtyard Housing Competition

'The Collegial Enclave', 2007
Lowell Morin & Jefta van Bellen

Our enclave is a living environment borne of three compositional elements. Courtyard spaces, urban context and housing units both delineate use and serve as catalysts for interaction in the enclave. The courtyards, loosely defined by the houses, connect in looped paths. The paths provide a link to the sidewalk, bridging public space with the courtyard. Several houses also have street frontage to preserve the urban façade. The housing units are designed with outwardly focused kitchens--allowing a watchful view over the courtyards. There, children can play as the color coordination of their bedrooms engage them and their families in the architecture of the enclave.
